Sangrur, April 03: Nine Congress councillors from Sangrur have accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the local administration of delaying the election of the municipal council president, alleging it is stalling development projects. In a letter to Punjab’s chief election commissioner, they claim the delay violates the Punjab Municipal Act.
The councillors, led by former minister Vijay Inder Singla, submitted their complaint through Sangrur deputy commissioner (DC) Sandeep Rishi. They noted that despite an assurance from sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Charanjot Singh Walia in March, the council chief remains unelected.
Three months after their election on December 26, they have yet to take the oath or form the House, which they argue prevents them from executing development work. “It is unfortunate that elected representatives are being kept from fulfilling their duties,” Singla said, accusing AAP and the administration of intentional obstruction.
AAP MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj, an ex-officio House member, denied the allegations, insisting the party had no role in the delay.
“It is up to the administration—be it the DC or SDM—to decide when the president is elected. We have a majority and will elect our president,” she stated.
The House comprises 29 members: AAP holds 14 seats, Congress nine, BJP three, and independents the remaining 10, five of whom later joined AAP. Sunam MLA Aman Arora is also an ex-officio member.
