Congress Gains Another Seat in Municipal Corporation

Second AAP councillor defects citing dissatisfaction with party leadership

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, March 22: The Chandigarh Congress expanded its presence in the Municipal Corporation on Sunday as AAP councillor Damanpreet Singh officially switched his allegiance. Singh, who represents Ward No. 17, follows in the footsteps of Prem Lata, who joined the Congress fold late last month alongside the wife of former Mayor Pradeep Chhabra.

The shift in loyalty was prompted by what Singh described as a disconnect between the local unit and its central leadership. He maintained that the Aam Aadmi Party’s operations in Chandigarh are managed externally, leaving little room for local officials to exercise their own judgment.

Singh declared that the party’s decision-making process was evidenced by his own experience during the mayoral selection. He stated that although his candidacy had been finalized, the leadership announced a different name at the last moment, bypassing the local consensus.

“The party was in disarray in Chandigarh,” Singh asserted during his address. He further stated that all affairs of the party were decided from Delhi or Punjab, rather than by those serving the city directly.

Harmohinder Singh Lucky, the city’s Congress president, affirmed that the recent influx of councillors demonstrates the party’s strengthening position. He stated that the organization is fully prepared for the next civic elections and expressed confidence in a total victory across all wards.
