Congress leader’s arrest in drug case sparks political slugfest

AAP claims Batala incident reveals 'real face' of opposition party

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Feb 14: The Punjab unit of the Aam Aadmi Party has demanded an explanation from the Congress leadership after a party operative was booked for heroin possession in Batala. The suspect, identified as Gurkirat Singh alias Kalu, is allegedly a close confidant of former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, a connection the AAP claims shows a deeper systemic issue within the opposition ranks.

Addressing the media, AAP Punjab Chief Spokesperson Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal mentioned that the arrest serves as evidence of the Congress party’s hypocrisy regarding the state’s drug problem. He noted that while senior Congress figures often criticize the government’s enforcement agencies, their own associates are being found in violation of the NDPS Act.

“This exposes the real face of Congress,” Dhaliwal directly said. He noted that photographs showing the accused with high-ranking Congress officials suggest a level of proximity that the party must address. The spokesperson mentioned that the recurring nature of these incidents makes it difficult for the public to trust the Congress’s rhetoric on social reform.

The MLA stated that the Punjab government remains firm in its mission to eradicate the drug trade through a comprehensive crackdown. He mentioned that the ongoing “war against drugs” does not differentiate between political affiliations and focuses solely on the enforcement of the law to protect the youth of Punjab.

“Whoever sells drugs or consumes drugs will face action,” Dhaliwal mentioned. He clarified that the administration is committed to ensuring that no offender, regardless of their political stature or connections, escapes the reach of the justice system.

The AAP leadership further asserted that the Congress must answer to the public why its leaders are repeatedly embroiled in narcotics cases. Dhaliwal noted that the state government’s priority remains the health and safety of its citizens, and any individual found sabotaging these efforts will be dealt with strictly as per the legal framework.
