Gurdaspur/Amritsar, Oct 15: Punjab Police on Tuesday busted a cross-border arms smuggling racket in Gurdaspur, recovering an AK-47 rifle, Glock pistols, and a large cache of ammunition, and arresting three men, DGP Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday.
The arrested accused have been identified as Gurwinder Singh alias Ginder of Sangrai (Gurdaspur), Vipan Kumar alias Manish of Marrianwal (Batala), and Chamkor Singh of Natt (Batala). The recovery included one AK-47 rifle with two magazines and 60 live cartridges, along with three 9mm Glock pistols, seven magazines, and 50 live cartridges, the DGP said.
The operation follows another major seizure a day earlier near the Indo-Pak border in Khemkaran, Tarn Taran, where two AK-47 rifles and a PX5 pistol were recovered. Preliminary investigation revealed that both consignments were arranged by USA-based Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, who coordinated with Pakistan-based handlers. The weapons were reportedly drone-dropped near Kalanaur in Gurdaspur in mid-September 2025.
Sukhminder Singh Mann, AIG, State Special Operation Cell (SSOC), Amritsar, said the recoveries were part of a sustained operation that began with the arrest of Ginder and Manish, who were earlier caught with one Glock pistol from the same consignment. He added that Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi is also linked to the murder of Cheema Khudi sarpanch Jugraj Singh, a case claimed by the Manu Agwan gang.
An FIR has been registered under Section 25 of the Arms Act, Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Section 22 of the NDPS Act. Police said further investigation is underway to trace and dismantle the entire smuggling network.
Separate seizure in Amritsar:
In a separate operation, Amritsar Rural Police arrested Amarbir Singh alias Amar of Dairiwal and recovered six pistols, 11 magazines, and 111 live cartridges. Police said Amar, who recently returned from Canada, was in contact with Pakistan-based smugglers. An FIR has been registered, and investigations are ongoing.
