CTU bus overturns near Sector-17, four injured

by TheReportingTimes

CHANDIGARH, Sept. 5 — A Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) bus overturned near the Sector-17 bus stand on Thursday morning, leaving four passengers injured and sparking an investigation into possible mechanical failure.

Police said the accident occurred when the Manimajra–Sector 17 bus, carrying 12 passengers, failed to stop as it approached the bus stand. Witnesses reported that the driver attempted to halt the vehicle, but the brakes did not respond, causing the bus to topple over.

“All 12 passengers were safely pulled out with the help of locals who rushed to the spot,” a police officer said. The injured were given first aid at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, and are reported to be out of danger.

Preliminary reports suggest a technical fault, likely linked to brake failure. Officials from the Chandigarh police and administration teams inspected the site, and a detailed probe has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the bus overturned near the crowded bus stand area. “The bus was not stopping at all, and suddenly it just lost balance and toppled,” said one bystander.

Authorities said safety checks would be intensified to prevent such incidents in the future. For now, the bus has been removed from the site, and normal traffic in the area has resumed.
