Chennai, Dec 1: A head-on collision between two Tamil Nadu government buses in Sivaganga district killed 11 people and injured 60 others on Sunday evening, police said.
The crash took place near Kummangudi, about five kilometres from Pillaiyarpatti in the Tirupattur area. “Eleven people, including a child, were killed in a road accident in Sivaganga district,” Tamil Nadu Police Chief said.
Authorities said one bus was travelling from Tiruppur to Karaikudi and the other from Karaikudi towards Dindigul. Rescue teams and local bystanders pulled survivors from the twisted wreckage. Photos showed one bus’s driver’s side ripped apart, while videos depicted injured passengers lying on the ground. A woman leapt from a damaged bus, and another sat bleeding from her forehead.
Emergency responders rushed the wounded to nearby hospitals. Officials are still investigating the cause of the collision and the condition of those hospitalised.
This is the second serious head-on bus crash in southern Tamil Nadu in a week. Earlier, six people died in Tenkasi district when two private buses collided, with investigators pointing to possible reckless driving.
