Delhi flags mission safety, summons Bangladesh envoy

by TheReportingTimes

New Delhi, Dec 17: India on Wednesday summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah to convey its concerns over the safety of its diplomatic mission in Dhaka, amid reports that extremist groups have announced plans to create a security situation around the Indian Mission.

The Ministry of External Affairs said the envoy was briefed on India’s unease over the worsening security conditions in Bangladesh.

“It is unfortunate that the interim government has neither conducted a thorough investigation nor shared meaningful evidence with India regarding the incidents,” the MEA said in a statement issued after the meeting.

While not detailing the incidents, the ministry said it “completely rejects the false narrative” being promoted by extremist elements in connection with recent events in Bangladesh.

The MEA said India expects Bangladesh’s interim government to fulfil its responsibilities under international diplomatic norms. “We expect the interim government to ensure the safety of Missions and Posts in Bangladesh in keeping with its diplomatic obligations,” it said.

The ministry said Hamidullah’s attention was specifically drawn to announcements by extremist elements about creating unrest around the Indian Mission in Dhaka.

Reiterating New Delhi’s stance, the MEA said India remains committed to peace and stability in Bangladesh.

“India has close and friendly relations with the people of Bangladesh rooted in the liberation struggle, and strengthened through various developmental and people-to-people initiatives,” it said.

India has consistently supported “free, fair, inclusive and credible elections” in Bangladesh, the MEA added, calling for the process to be conducted in a peaceful atmosphere.
