Delhi set for Putin visit

by TheReportingTimes

NEW DELHI, Dec 4— Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives on Thursday for a two-day visit framed by ceremony, strategic messaging and a full slate of economic and defence talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The visit comes as India pushes back against US and NATO criticism of its Moscow ties. Indian officials said the summit underlines New Delhi’s independent foreign policy, even as Washington’s tariff actions — including steep duties on Indian exports and penalties linked to Russian oil — have strained relations.

Putin will first be received by senior officials and later join Modi for a private dinner. On Friday, Rashtrapati Bhavan will host a ceremonial welcome, followed by a wreath-laying at Raj Ghat.

Formal discussions begin at Hyderabad House, starting with a small, high-level session before broad delegation talks. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow expects “real progress” on trade and defence cooperation. Business groups from both nations are also meeting, with Indian companies eyeing opportunities in Russia’s Far East and Russian firms seeking access to Indian markets amid sanctions.

Officials said several pacts are likely, including agreements on trade, economic cooperation, healthcare and a mobility arrangement allowing smoother travel for Indian citizens to Russia. The leaders will issue a joint statement after a working lunch.

Putin will later meet President Droupadi Murmu and attend a state banquet before departing Friday night. Delhi has activated a five-layer security shield using elite forces, Russian security units, snipers, drones, signal-jamming equipment and AI-supported monitoring systems.
