Dhawan questioned by ED in illegal betting app probe

by TheReportingTimes

New Delhi, September 4: Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday in connection with a money-laundering investigation linked to an alleged illegal betting application.

Officials said Dhawan, 39, reached the ED’s central Delhi office around 11 a.m. and was questioned about his association with the betting platform 1xBet. His statement was recorded under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

According to sources, Dhawan is believed to have been connected to the app through certain endorsements, and investigators sought details of his links during the deposition.

The ED is probing multiple cases involving similar betting apps accused of defrauding people of crores of rupees or evading large sums in taxes. Last month, former cricketer Suresh Raina was also summoned and questioned in the same investigation.

The Centre has recently tightened regulations around online gaming, banning real-money platforms through fresh legislation.
