NEW DELHI, June 30 — Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has moved to legally claim the title most famously associated with his cricketing legacy: Captain Cool. According to the Trade Marks Registry portal, Dhoni filed a trademark application for the phrase on June 5, and its status has now been marked as “accepted and advertised.” It was officially published in the trademark journal on June 16.
The registration falls under the category of sports training, coaching services, and sports training facilities. No official statement has been issued by Dhoni or his representatives regarding the move.
The sobriquet “Captain Cool” became synonymous with Dhoni over his illustrious career, known for his unshakable composure and strategic mastery on the field, particularly under high-pressure situations.
Interestingly, a similar trademark application had earlier been filed by Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd, but its current status shows “rectification filed,” indicating it is under legal review or dispute resolution.
The trademark development follows closely on the heels of Dhoni’s induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame for 2025. He was honoured alongside seven others, including Australia’s Matthew Hayden and South Africa’s Hashim Amla.
In a statement, the International Cricket Council (ICC) praised Dhoni’s unparalleled contributions to the game. “Celebrated for his calm under pressure and unmatched tactical nous, but also a trailblazer in the shorter formats, MS Dhoni’s legacy as one of the game’s greatest finishers, leaders and wicketkeepers has been honoured with his induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame,” it said.
Known for leading India to victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy, Dhoni remains one of the most iconic figures in modern cricket. His move to trademark Captain Cool is seen as a natural extension of the persona that captivated fans worldwide.
