Mohali, Dec 26: Closely fought contests marked the conclusion of the 2nd district Gatka tournament in Mohali, with Khalsa Sewa Dal Gatka Akhara claiming first position, organizers said Friday.

The tournament, held near Gurdwara Nanak Darbar in Sector 91, was conducted under the aegis of the Gatka Association of Punjab and dedicated to the martyrdom of the younger Sahibzadas and Mata Gujar Kaur Ji.

Misl Shaheedan Gatka Akhara finished second, while Mata Sahib Deva Gatka Akhara (Girls) secured third place.

The concluding event was inaugurated by MLA Kulwant Singh, who called on parents to deepen their children’s understanding of Sikh traditions.

“Children must be connected with Sikh history, gurbani and heritage from a young age,” Singh said. “Such platforms help preserve Sikhi and inspire selfless service.”

In the girls’ Soti-Farri individual category, Ishpreet Kaur stood first and Harmanpreet Kaur second. Inderjit Singh won the boys’ category, with Baghel Singh finishing as runner-up.

Phool Raj Singh, president of the organizing society, said nine district teams participated in the competition. “To promote Gatka internationally and form more teams, federations are being established in several countries,” he said, announcing plans to start a Gatka Akhara at Gurdwara Nanak Darbar under expert supervision.

Gatka promoter Advocate Harjeet Singh Grewal cautioned against deviating from tradition. “Shastar Vidya, as bestowed by Guru Sahib, does not allow any form of stunt or showmanship,” he said.

Senior police officers, resident welfare association members, former councillors and Gatka officials were among those present. The judging panel oversaw the competition, organizers said.
