Drug Arrests, Traffic Checks Shape Phagwara Policing

by TheReportingTimes

Phagwara, Dec 31: Drug trafficking and traffic violations remained at the centre of policing efforts in Phagwara in 2025, with police arresting 338 alleged drug traffickers and issuing 9,557 challans over the year, officials said.

Police data shows that a total of 873 criminal cases were registered during the year as part of sustained enforcement drives. Officers said these included cases related to narcotics, gambling, excise violations and other offences.

“Traffic density has increased sharply, and enforcement had to be stepped up to prevent accidents and violations,” a senior police officer said.

Narcotics enforcement accounted for a significant portion of police activity. During raids, naka operations and targeted investigations, police recovered heroin, opium, poppy husk, ganja, charas, pharmaceutical drugs and illicit liquor.

Several cases were booked under the NDPS Act, with investigators uncovering links to organised supply chains extending beyond the district. “These are not isolated cases. We are dealing with structured networks,” the officer said.

Police also seized cash and vehicles worth lakhs of rupees while acting against gambling dens and illegal liquor trade. Officials said special teams were deployed to track repeat offenders and execute long-pending warrants.

According to senior officers, 2025 proved demanding due to evolving crime trends and persistent substance abuse problems. However, they said continuous checking drives, intelligence inputs and cooperation from residents played a key role in maintaining order.

“Our effort was to stay ahead of crime while ensuring visible policing,” the officer said.
