Chandigarh, Aug 8  –The Election Commission of India (ECI) has revised the remuneration and honorarium for government staff, polling personnel and security forces deployed on election duty, Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C announced on Thursday.

Speaking about the decision, the CEO said that officials from central and state governments, PSUs and various departments form the backbone of election management and are entrusted with crucial responsibilities at the ground level.

“These personnel perform difficult and sensitive tasks, often for extended hours and months, to ensure a peaceful and fair electoral process,” Sibin C said. He added that their role is vital in maintaining a free and conducive polling environment, enabling voters to exercise their franchise without fear or pressure.

Acknowledging the demanding nature of their work, the ECI has approved a long-awaited hike in pay and honorarium. The last major revision was carried out between 2014 and 2016.

The revision covers a broad range of personnel, including Presiding Officers, Polling Officers, Counting Officers, Micro Observers, and others. In addition, the honorarium for Deputy District Election Officers, Sector Officers, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel has also been increased.

The CEO further stated that the rates of food and refreshments provided to staff on polling and counting duty have also been enhanced.

“These revisions are aimed at ensuring fairness and recognition for the hard work and dedication of all employees involved in conducting elections,” he said.
