NEW DELHI, July 15 — The execution of Nimisha Priya, a 38-year-old Indian nurse from Kerala convicted of murder in Yemen, has been postponed, according to official sources on Tuesday. Her hanging had been scheduled for Wednesday, July 16.
Priya, a native of Kollengode in Kerala’s Palakkad district, was sentenced to death in 2020 by a Yemeni court after being found guilty of killing a Yemeni national in July 2017. Her appeal was later dismissed by Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023.
“The execution has been postponed by the local authorities,” said a source familiar with the matter. However, no new date has been announced, and Yemeni officials have not provided an official explanation for the deferral.
Priya is currently incarcerated in a prison in Sana’a, the Yemeni capital, which remains under the control of Iran-backed Houthi forces.
The delay in her execution offers a brief window for ongoing diplomatic and humanitarian efforts, though the future of her case remains uncertain.
