Srinagar, Nov 15: J&K Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat on Saturday called the deadly explosion at Nowgam Police Station on Friday night “accidental and unfortunate.”

At a press conference in Srinagar, the DGP said a large quantity of explosives recovered from Faridabad during an ongoing investigation had been secured at the station. The material, he noted, was highly sensitive, and sampling and examination were being conducted with extreme caution.

“Despite all precautions, an accidental blast occurred last night, resulting in the tragic loss of nine lives and injuries to 27 others,” Prabhat said.

He identified the deceased as one SIA official, three FSCL personnel, two crime photographers, two revenue officials, and one tailor. Among the 27 injured are police personnel and civilians, many of whom are undergoing treatment.

The explosion caused severe damage to the police station building and nearby residential structures, which are being assessed.

The DGP said, “J&K Police stands in full solidarity with the families of the deceased and prays for the swift recovery of the injured.”

He dismissed speculation as baseless and confirmed that a detailed investigation into the incident is underway.
