SANGRUR, November 24 — A late-night attempt to overtake a truck ended in tragedy on Saturday when a BMW carrying five young men crashed near the Kakuwala picket, killing two of them and injuring the three others, police said on Sunday. According to the FIR, the accident occurred around 11 p.m., as the car was headed from Dirba towards Patran.
Investigators said driver Sunet Singh tried to pass a truck but lost control, forcing the vehicle across the divider before it overturned repeatedly. The BMW caught fire shortly after the crash, trapping the occupants and causing fatal injuries to two of them. “Our initial probe points to high speed as the main cause,” said Dirba DSP Rupinder Kaur, noting that all five were aged between 18 and 25.
The deceased were identified as Dilshad Khan and Armanjot Singh, both of whom died instantly. The injured — Jaskaran Singh, Jaskaran Singh alias Jassi, and Sunet — were first taken to the government hospital in Patran. Officials said Jaskaran and Sunet were later shifted to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala because of severe trauma.
Police said the truck driver fled, abandoning the vehicle at the crash site. An FIR under sections 281, 106, 324(4) and 125(A) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been filed against an unidentified driver. DSP Kaur said, “We are working to identify the truck driver and collect more evidence to establish the sequence of events.”
