ROHTAK, May 15: In a heart-wrenching incident in Majra village, Rohtak, a man and his two sons lost their lives after allegedly inhaling toxic gases while attempting to clear a clogged sewage line at their residence on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Mahabir Singh and his sons Deepak and Lakshman.
According to the family, the tragedy unfolded when Lakshman was the first to enter the sewer to check the blockage but quickly fell unconscious after inhaling the noxious gases.
“Just when we were telling him to be careful, he started feeling uneasy and fainted,” said Santosh Devi, wife of Mahabir Singh.
“Then my husband went in, followed by Deepak, but none of them came back out. I screamed for help.”
Emergency response teams, including police and disaster management units, rushed to the spot. Despite challenges, the rescuers managed to pull out all three and transported them to the hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Rohtak DSP (Headquarters) Ravi Khundia confirmed the sequence of events, adding that the bodies were sent for autopsy under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
“We urge all residents to refrain from entering sewer lines without proper safety gear. In such situations, the civic body should always be contacted for help,” DSP Khundia said.
Mahabir Singh and Santosh Devi had three sons and four daughters, all married except for one son, Rajkumar.
The sudden loss of three family members has left the village community and relatives in deep mourning.
Authorities have reiterated the need for awareness and adherence to safety protocols, especially in residential areas, to prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future.
