Girinagar, March 19 — A massive fire gutted 15 huts in Girinagar, Paonta Sahib, on Monday evening, rendering nearly 100 people homeless. The blaze, which broke out around 5:30 pm, spread rapidly through the densely packed Gujjar community settlement, destroying all belongings and killing several livestock.
Locals alerted the Paonta Sahib Fire Brigade, but by the time firefighters arrived, the flames had already engulfed most of the huts. “The fire was extremely intense, and it took us hours to douse the flames. Fortunately, no human casualties have been reported, but the financial and emotional loss is immense,” said Ram Kumar, fire officer, Paonta Sahib.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire started due to a short circuit in one of the huts. With the structures largely made of wood, dry grass, and plastic sheets, the fire spread uncontrollably.
The blaze destroyed household items, essential documents, and cash savings. Many families, who rely on cattle rearing for their livelihood, lost three to four livestock animals each.
The district administration has assured immediate relief. “We are working on providing temporary shelter, food, and essential supplies to the victims. Further financial aid will be extended as per government policies,” said an official.
Local NGOs and community groups have stepped in, urging the government and citizens to provide financial and material support to help the victims rebuild their lives.
