SHIMLA, June 30— Several districts in Himachal Pradesh are facing a heightened risk of flashfloods over the next 24 hours, as heavy rainfall continues to sweep across the region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned on Monday.
In an alert issued by its Hydromet Division, the IMD said that moderate to high flashflood risks are “very likely” in watersheds and surrounding areas across Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Solan districts. The warning will remain in effect until July 1.
“These flashfloods may lead to surface runoff and possible inundation in low-lying areas and zones with already saturated soils,” the advisory stated, urging residents and local administrations to remain vigilant.
In addition, the IMD issued an orange weather warning for nine districts, including Shimla, Solan, Kullu, Mandi, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Chamba, Kangra, and Sirmaur. These areas are expected to witness isolated episodes of heavy rainfall, intense thunderstorms, and lightning over the next several hours.
The weather office also predicted light to moderate rainfall in Shimla and surrounding regions, along with reduced visibility, which may impact travel and daily activities.
Officials have advised residents to stay alert, avoid crossing swollen streams, and refrain from unnecessary travel during the warning period. Local authorities are closely monitoring river catchments and vulnerable zones for any signs of sudden water surges.
The current wet spell is part of a broader monsoon system sweeping across northern India, which has already brought significant precipitation to the hill state in recent days.
