Mohali, August 29 – Zirakpur police have busted a gang that allegedly used an e-rickshaw to carry out multiple snatching incidents in the city. Four members of the group were arrested on Wednesday night following a naka operation near the Chandigarh–Ambala Highway.
The accused have been identified as Prashant of Mauli Jagran, Rameshpal of Vikas Nagar, and Anil Kumar and Priyanka, both residents of Mauli Jagran, Chandigarh. Police said the gang’s modus operandi involved riding an e-rickshaw to deserted stretches, identifying vulnerable targets, and snatching mobile phones, purses, and chains before fleeing.
CCTV footage from recent cases repeatedly showed a suspicious e-rickshaw near the crime scenes, leading police to track down the suspects. A special team under ASI Sulkhan Singh was formed, which intercepted the gang during the naka.
Police recovered three mobile phones, two gold chains, purses, and the e-rickshaw used in the crimes. Officials said the gang often posed as poor rickshaw drivers to gain trust and mainly preyed on women and the elderly.
