Gavaskar Backs IPL as Perfect Training for India’s Future Captains!

Chandigarh, May 17: Former Indian team captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that the IPL is the perfect training ground for future Indian captains, which is providing players like Shubman Gill the necessary experience before reaching the top level. After Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the Test format, there is talk that Gill can take charge of the Indian team on the England tour.

Gill is in the race to become captain

Gill has been included in the India A team for the second first-class match against England Lions ahead of the five-match Test series against England. There is also news that apart from Gill, Rishabh Pant can be the vice-captain. Gavaskar said that other potential captains apart from Gill like Pant and Shreyas Iyer will take at least two years to prepare. Pant is currently captaining the Lucknow Super Giants, while Iyer is captaining the Punjab Kings in this IPL.

Gavaskar said, when you look at Gill, Iyer and Pant who are the three main contenders for the Indian captaincy, you see a mix of all three (Dhoni, Rohit, Virat). Gill is probably more competitive because whenever there is a decision, he immediately asks the umpire. He is probably more involved in these. However, Pant is behind the stumps and he is also well involved in all these field decisions. Iyer has also been brilliant. All three have captained in a positive manner. As a captain, you get the most experience from the pressure of T20. This is the best training ground for captaincy.
