Glenn Maxwell Retires from ODIs, Focuses on T20

June 2, Glenn Maxwell announces ODI retirement: Australia’s explosive batsman Glenn Maxwell has suddenly announced his retirement from ODI cricket. Maxwell will however continue to play T20 cricket. After making his ODI debut against Afghanistan in 2012, Maxwell played 149 ODIs for Australia, in which he scored 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 126.70. Maxwell also took 77 wickets and took 91 catches in the 50-over format with his excellent off-spin bowling.

Maxwell said about his retirement on the Final Word podcast, “I spoke with (chairman of selectors) George Bailey and asked him what his thoughts were about the future. We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I told him, ‘I don’t think I will be able to succeed in it, now it’s time to plan for other players in my place so that they can come to this team and take the team forward, hopefully they will get enough opportunities to maintain that role.’

Maxwell said in the Final Word podcast, “I have always said that if I feel that I am contributing equally to my team, then I would never be apart from ODIs. But I did not want to play for selfish reasons.” Let us tell you that Maxwell’s strike rate is 126 which is the second highest in ODI cricket, he is only behind West Indies legend Andre Russell.

Maxwell said about the decision to retire from ODIs, “I felt that I was disappointing the team a bit because the body was not reacting according to the circumstances. I have spoken to (chairman of selectors) George Bailey and have come to this decision.”

Has scored a double century in ODIs
