Govt Asks X to Remove ‘Illegal Posts’

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Jan 4, 2026 – The Indian government has directed social media platform X to remove all illegal content, including material created using its AI service, Grok, and warned offending accounts could face permanent suspension. The move comes after reports of vulgar and unlawful posts circulating on the platform.

“Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will face the same consequences as uploading it directly,” Elon Musk said in a post on X.

X’s Global Government Affairs team said the platform removes illegal content, suspends accounts permanently, and cooperates with law enforcement. “Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT issued the notice on January 2, asking X to act against obscene, vulgar, and AI-generated content and submit a detailed action report within 72 hours. The ministry cited public complaints and representations from lawmakers, including Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, about misuse of Grok to generate explicit content targeting women.

Earlier, on December 29, Meity asked social media firms to review compliance frameworks and take action against unlawful content, warning of prosecution if platforms failed to act.

X also clarified its policy on adult content, allowing consensual material provided it is properly labelled and not prominently displayed, as per platform rules. Officials said the enforcement follows growing concerns over the circulation of obscene and unlawful content on social media.
