Greenfield road project to open within a week

Chandigarh, Dec 20: The long-delayed Greenfield road project, designed to decongest Airport Road and provide an alternative route toward Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, is expected to be opened to the public within a week, officials said.

Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal confirmed that the final formalities were underway after the project missed multiple deadlines earlier this year.

“The project is set to be thrown open within a week,” Mittal said.

The ₹1,400-crore project, executed under the Centre’s Bharatmala Pariyojana, was originally scheduled to open on Dec. 1 after missing its June and September deadlines. Its launch was further delayed due to protests by landowners and farmer union members demanding an entry and exit near the toll plaza.

The protest ended on Dec. 4, allowing the National Highways Authority of India to complete the remaining work on the corridor.

The 31-km road connects IT Chowk in Mohali to the Kurali-Chandigarh Road, skirting the outskirts of Mohali city. Officials said the route is expected to divert a substantial volume of traffic away from Airport Road once opened.

Construction on the Greenfield project began in October 2022 and was carried out by a Maharashtra-based firm. Authorities said the road has now been completed after more than three years of work.

Officials expect the corridor to improve traffic flow and reduce travel time for commuters heading toward northern states once it becomes operational.
