Gunfire at wedding leaves two dead in Ludhiana

LUDHIANA, Nov 30 — What began as a minor argument at a wedding turned deadly late Saturday when gunfire broke out between two invitee groups, killing two and injuring one, police said. The incident occurred during the wedding of contractor Varinder Kapoor at Bath Castle Palace.

Investigators said the groups led by Ankur and Shubham Mota arrived at the venue around the same time and immediately confronted each other. A brief exchange escalated into a fistfight in which businessman J.K. Dawar was hurt. Gunshots followed moments later, triggering chaos as guests ran for safety.

The victims were identified as Kapoor’s friend, Vasu Chopra, and his relative, Neetu Chhabra.

Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma said the violence stemmed from “a trivial issue between two youths,” adding that several involved were drunk. “This is not a gang war, as some people online are claiming,” he said. “Six accused have been detained, and we are tracking the rest.”

A cross-FIR was filed naming Ankur, Jasvir, Rubal Pradhan, Dawar, Shubham Mota and Yuvraj Singh, along with others. Police said Kapoor was also booked for bringing individuals with a record of previous quarrels.

Sharma said the remaining suspects would be arrested soon. “If licensed weapons were misused, the licences will be cancelled. Unlicensed firearms will be confiscated,” he said.

Police have also booked the marriage palace management for violating security rules issued by the administration.
