Gurdaspur, Oct 25: The parents of Jashanpreet Singh, the 21-year-old truck driver arrested in California for a crash that killed three and injured four, said they mortgaged their family home to fund his journey to the United States.
“We had made elaborate plans for our son’s future, but everything is ruined now. Destiny has its own way,” said Ravinder Singh, his father. The family had paid Rs 40 lakh to a travel agent to send Jashanpreet abroad.
Jashanpreet reportedly entered the US through its southern border in November 2022 and was released by border patrol officials under a government policy allowing temporary release pending deportation hearings.
“We are devastated, but more than anything else, this drug issue must be settled once and for all. It’s hurting us deeply,” said Ravinder Singh, who also extended condolences to the victims’ families.
