Gurdaspur, Feb 23: The Punjab government has pledged significant financial assistance to the kin of two police officers found dead under mysterious circumstances near the International Border. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that Rs 1 crore would be granted to the families of ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard Ashok Kumar, supplemented by an equal amount from bank insurance.

The bodies of the two personnel were located inside a checkpost in the Adhian sector on Sunday morning. Local authorities declared that the discovery was made by a village sarpanch after the officers failed to answer radio and phone communications from their home station.

Investigation teams asserted that the physical evidence at the scene is currently being analyzed by forensic experts. ASI Gurnam Singh was found in a seated position, while Ashok Kumar was found on a cot, both bearing clear gunshot marks.

“We stand strongly with our martyrs and their families,” Chief Minister Mann stated. He affirmed that the sacrifice made by the officers in such a high-risk border area would be recognized with full state honors.

While the motive remains under investigation, officials observed that the Gurdaspur border belt frequently sees activity related to cross-border drone incursions. Police rejected a social media claim of responsibility from a militant outfit, declaring it a likely fabrication intended to cause panic.

Senior officers maintained that the department is looking into various possibilities, including external interference or potential foul play at the post. The forensic reports are expected to clarify the trajectory of the shots and the timing of the incident in the coming days.
