6 August, Himachal: Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the State Advisory Board on Cancer and Palliative Care Program held here today, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu declared that the state government would offer free medical care and medications to all cancer patients.

He declared that cancer patients receiving care in government hospitals would receive 42 medications at no cost to them. He also mentioned that these medications were on the state’s list of vital medications.
Sukhu stated, “It is really concerning that Himachal Pradesh now ranks second in the nation for cancer cases, behind the northeast. Because of this, it has been decided to give cancer patients in different government hospitals free treatment. A bone marrow transplant facility valued at Rs 75 crore is set to open at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialties in Chamiyana, he continued.
According to the Chief Minister, among the free medications was the trastuzumab vaccine, which is roughly Rs 40,000 and is used in the treatment of cancer. Someone suffering with breast cancer requires eighteen of these vaccinations annually. The state government would pay roughly Rs 7 lakh for each patient in order to administer this vaccine.

“The state government will set up cancer day care centers all across the state in a phased manner beginning with 13 hospitals,” declared the chief minister. These centers would be established at 27 community health centers and high-load civil hospitals in the second phase, and in the final 28 institutions.
He also mentioned that cancer day care centers would have chemotherapy units installed. “The state government will establish a Cancer Care Centre of Excellence, utilizing cutting-edge technology in Hamirpur” Here, a dedicated nuclear medicine department will be established, together with a sizable nuclear lab and cyclotron,” he continued.
