Himachal Braces for Snowfall, Rain in High Altitudes

SHIMLA, JAN 4— Fresh snowfall and rain are expected in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh on January 5 and 6, the state Meteorological Department said on Sunday, while most other parts of the state are likely to remain dry.

An official spokesperson of the department said snowfall along with rain is very likely in Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti districts on both days. “Snow is also likely to occur in the higher reaches of Kullu and Chamba districts on January 6,” the spokesperson said.

The department has issued a yellow warning for dense fog in several parts of the state till January 8. Officials said fog conditions may affect visibility in some areas during the morning and night hours.

The weather across Himachal Pradesh remained largely dry over the past 24 hours. Minimum temperatures in most areas were recorded 2°C to 3°C above normal, ranging from minus 6°C to 8°C, while maximum temperatures in several places were 2°C to 5°C below normal, ranging between 2°C and 19°C.

Among key locations, Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 3.6°C, Dharamsala 3.5°C, Manali 0.2°C, Kangra 6.6°C and Solan 0.6°C. Kalpa recorded minus 3°C, while Tabo was among the coldest locations at minus 6.1°C.

The department said temperatures are likely to rise in the coming days. “Minimum temperatures are expected to increase by 2°C to 3°C, while maximum temperatures may rise by 2°C to 4°C in most parts of the state,” the spokesperson said.

Bajaura village in Kullu district was recorded as the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 21.2°C, while Kukumseri village in Lahaul and Spiti district recorded the lowest minimum temperature at minus 6.3°C.
