Himachal Sees Rain in Pockets; Thunderstorm Alert for Eight Districts

SHIMLA, May 20 — Light rainfall and isolated hailstorms were reported across parts of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in eight districts later this week.

According to the MeT office, showers were observed in Shimla and Palampur, with hail also reported in parts of Kangra. In the higher reaches, Nichar in Kinnaur recorded 12 mm of rain, followed by Sangla with 11.4 mm, Kalpa 6 mm, and Reckong Peo 3 mm.

In Lahaul and Spiti district, Kukumseri received 9.6 mm of rain, while Keylong recorded 1.5 mm. Light rain was also reported in Naina Devi (Bilaspur) with 2 mm.

Thunderstorm activity was seen in Kalpa, Jubbarhatti near Shimla, and Sundernagar in Mandi district, while gusty winds swept through Kufri and Kotkhai.

Despite the weather activity, temperatures remained largely steady across the state. Tabo in Lahaul and Spiti registered the coldest night at 4.3°C, while Una continued to sizzle as the hottest spot with a maximum of 39.6°C.

Looking ahead, the MeT office has warned of possible thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur on Thursday and Friday. Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti are also likely to witness gusty winds during the same period.
