Chandigarh, July 25: More than a week after Congress MP Manish Tewari stepped down from a key UT panel, Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky has been appointed chairperson of the Art, Culture, Tourism and Heritage Preservation Committee under the Administrator’s Advisory Council.
Lucky’s appointment comes in the wake of MP Tewari’s resignation on July 14, just two days after the UT administration announced 10 standing committees. Tewari had objected to what he described as political bias in the composition of the panels.
In his resignation letter to Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, Tewari noted, “While the Chandigarh presidents of other political parties have been appointed as chairpersons of one sub-committee or the other, the president of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee (CTCC), HS Lucky, was merely made a member. This is a serious anomaly.”
Tewari had recommended that Lucky be given the chairmanship instead, citing the need for fair representation.
Responding to his appointment, Lucky thanked Governor Kataria and MP Tewari. “I am grateful for the trust placed in me. I will work to promote and preserve the city’s cultural and historical legacy,” he said.
The reshuffle appears to be a response to concerns over political imbalance in the advisory structure. Seven out of the 10 committee chairpersons initially appointed belonged to a single political group, Tewari had noted in his letter.
