HSGMC Rejects Haryana Cabinet’s Amendments to Sikh Gurdwara Act

by TheReportingTimes

Kurukshetra, 8 August: The Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) has unanimously rejected the proposed amendments to the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Act, 2014, recently approved by the Haryana Cabinet.

In a meeting held at the committee’s headquarters in Kurukshetra, 32 members of the General House passed a resolution opposing the changes. HSGMC president Jagdish Singh Jhinda termed the Cabinet’s move “unacceptable”, alleging that the 11-member executive body was not consulted before the decision.

“We do not accept these amendments made without our consent. Future changes must involve our participation,” Jhinda said.

A major point of contention is the amendment to Section 17(2)(c), which transfers the authority to remove committee members from the General House to the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission. The committee views this as an infringement on its autonomy.

Jhinda said the HSGMC has sought a meeting with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to express its concerns and will soon convene a Sikh Sammelan to seek broader community feedback ahead of the upcoming Assembly session.
