Chandigarh, Nov 2— Nearly four months after 22-year-old Nimita Raj was found hanging inside her rented home at Mauli Jagran, police have registered an FIR against her husband and two of his relatives on charges of dowry death and cruelty.
The case was registered following a complaint by Nimita’s father, Majnu, who alleged his daughter was “driven to death” by the persistent torture and dowry demands of her husband Rajneesh, his sister Rama, and Rama’s husband Sandeep.
In his complaint, Majnu said he had borrowed ₹15 lakh for Nimita’s wedding to Rajneesh on December 9, 2024, but her married life turned violent within weeks. “She used to call and cry, saying they beat her for no reason and kept asking, ‘What have you brought from home?’” he wrote. He further claimed that the accused took away her gold jewellery and demanded a Mahindra Scorpio car to start a business.
Majnu also alleged that Rajneesh frequently returned home drunk and assaulted Nimita. “He would threaten that he had big contacts in Chandigarh and no one could touch him,” the father added.
After Nimita’s body was discovered in July, Majnu claimed the family was not informed promptly and that the police “hurriedly sent the body for post-mortem” without their consent. “We suspect the report was manipulated to make it look like suicide,” he said.
On his complaint, the Sitapur police in Uttar Pradesh initially registered a zero FIR under Sections 80(2) and 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. The case was then transferred to Chandigarh, where Mauli Jagran police recorded it formally on October 31.
A senior officer confirmed that “the investigation is ongoing and being supervised by a sub-inspector”.
Majnu said he only wants justice for his daughter. “She was just 22. All she ever wanted was peace in her marriage,” he said.
