IGMC imposes penalties in hostel ragging case

by TheReportingTimes

Shimla, Dec 15: The Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) has taken strict disciplinary action against two senior MBBS students for allegedly ragging juniors in hostel premises, officials said.

Both students were suspended for three months and fined ₹50,000 each, following an internal inquiry and the recommendation of the disciplinary committee. “The case technically falls under ragging, but it was not extremely serious. Hence, disciplinary action was taken instead of invoking provisions of the Ragging Act,” said a member of the IGMC disciplinary committee.

The incident reportedly took place three to four days ago when senior students invited juniors to the hostel at night, violating established rules that prohibit juniors from entering hostels until formal accommodation is assigned. The hostel warden lodged a complaint after monitoring by CCTV and anti-ragging vigilance.

This is not the first ragging-related case at IGMC Shimla. In 2019, a conflict between senior and junior doctors over duty assignments led to a scuffle, resulting in suspension and fines for the seniors involved.

The college administration reiterated that no laxity would be tolerated in enforcing institutional rules and warned that any recurrence of such incidents would result in stricter action.
