Shimla, October 17, 2025 — Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla is set to soon get a robotic surgery facility, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Wednesday evening. The facility will follow similar installations at the Super Specialty Hospital in Chamiana and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College and Hospital in Tanda.
Chairing a health department meeting, CM Sukhu said that 40 beds would be allocated at IGMC specifically for robotic surgery patients referred from Kamla Nehru Hospital (KNH), Shimla. “The state government is committed to providing state-of-the-art machinery to ensure the best medical care for the people of Himachal Pradesh,” he said.
The Chief Minister directed that robotic surgery services begin with gynecological procedures. “Gynecologists from KNH will also perform elective surgeries at IGMC, and the KNH administration will deploy a team to facilitate these operations. This will make advanced treatment accessible to female patients at both hospitals,” Sukhu added.
He noted that a three-month trial phase would be conducted for robotic and elective surgeries at IGMC, with adjustments made based on the outcomes of the trial.
In addition, Sukhu said a diagnostic laboratory is being established at IGMC, for which ₹25 crore has already been released to the college administration. The lab aims to strengthen the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities and improve patient care services.
Officials said the move reflects the state government’s broader plan to enhance healthcare infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh by introducing advanced medical technologies in public hospitals, ensuring patients can access modern treatments without traveling to other states.
