IMD Issues Heat Wave Alert for Northwest India

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, April 5: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heat wave alert across northwestern India, warning of rising temperatures in the next six days. The warning includes Punjab, Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and western Madhya Pradesh.

According to the IMD, maximum temperatures in many parts of central and northwestern India are expected to rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius during this period. “Conditions are favourable for a significant temperature increase over the next few days,” the department said.

Earlier this week, the IMD had predicted above-normal temperatures between April and June, with heat wave conditions likely across the central and eastern regions and the northwestern plains. Typically, heat waves in India occur between April and June and last between four and seven days.

In Punjab, authorities have issued a separate alert from April 6 to April 9, specifically warning residents of five districts: Fazilka, Muktsar, Bathinda, Mansa and Barnala. The department said these areas are likely to experience severe heat conditions during the alert period.

Officials have urged people to take precautions, stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours.
