India Backs Ceasefire, Offers Role in Resolving Iran-Israel Crisis

by TheReportingTimes

NEW DELHI, June 24 — Hours after US President Donald Trump claimed a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, India on Tuesday welcomed the reported de-escalation and reiterated its call for dialogue and diplomacy, expressing readiness to play a constructive role in restoring peace in the region.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi said it remained “deeply concerned” about the unfolding situation, which escalated sharply following US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and subsequent Iranian retaliation targeting American bases in Qatar.

“We have been following developments overnight relating to the conflict between Iran and Israel, including the US action against Iran’s nuclear facilities and Iranian retaliation against US military bases in Qatar,” the MEA said.

“While we remain deeply concerned about the prospects for overall and sustained regional security and stability, we welcome reports of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel and the role played by the US and Qatar in bringing it about,” the statement added.

Trump, who first announced the ceasefire, later accused both Tehran and Tel Aviv of violating the terms, casting uncertainty over the truce.

India emphasized that the only path forward lies in sustained dialogue. “We wish to reiterate that there is no alternative to dialogue and diplomacy in order to address and resolve the multiple conflicts in the region,” the MEA said, adding that “India stands ready to play its part in these efforts and hopes that all parties concerned will work towards sustained peace and stability.”

This is the second time in three days that India has formally expressed concern over the situation. On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation with newly elected Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which he urged immediate de-escalation.

“We discussed in detail about the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations,” Modi said in a post on social media. “Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability.”

The direct US military action on three key Iranian nuclear sites — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — has raised fears of a broader regional conflict, prompting calls from across the globe for restraint.

India’s balanced position reflects its long-standing policy of strategic neutrality, while also signaling its willingness to engage diplomatically in global peace-building efforts.
