CHANDIGARH, August 20— India has once again demonstrated its strategic capabilities with the successful test-firing of the Agni V missile. The Defence Ministry announced on Wednesday that the “Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni 5’ was successfully test-fired” from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, in Odisha.
This nuclear-capable missile is designed to strike targets at a distance greater than 5,000 km.
The ministry mentioned that the launch “validated all operational and technical parameters.” The Agni V system, which has been tested approximately 10 times since April 2012, is equipped with advanced indigenous avionics and high-accuracy sensor packages.
These features ensure that its re-entry vehicles precisely hit their intended targets. The missile is powered by a three-stage solid-fuelled engine.
Last year, India had tested a version of the Agni V that incorporates Multiple Independently Targetable Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology.
This advancement allows a single missile to carry multiple warheads and independently strike different locations, unlike older missile systems that could only hit a single programmed target.
