India Targets $500 Billion In US Imports

Five-year trade roadmap focuses on energy, aviation, and advanced tech

New Delhi, Feb 7: India has committed to a massive expansion of its trade relationship with the United States, outlining a plan to import $500 billion worth of American goods over the next five years. This strategic initiative, detailed in a recent joint statement, serves as a cornerstone of the interim trade agreement framework aimed at fortifying economic and security ties between the two nations.

The procurement strategy focuses heavily on high-value sectors, including energy products, commercial aircraft, and specialized aviation components. Additionally, India plans to ramp up its intake of coking coal, precious metals, and cutting-edge technology products to fuel its domestic industrial growth.

“India has signalled its intent to purchase $500 billion worth of US goods over the next five years, including energy products, aircraft and advanced technology goods,” officials mentioned during the announcement.

The trade framework also addresses the burgeoning digital economy. Both countries agreed to establish comprehensive digital trade rules while removing burdensome practices that currently hinder bilateral commerce. This includes a specific focus on technology hardware, such as graphics processing units (GPUs) and critical infrastructure for data centres.

Strategic alignment remains a primary goal of the framework, with both governments pledging to cooperate on investment screening and export controls. By addressing the non-market practices of third countries, the agreement seeks to ensure supply chain resilience and long-term economic security for both partners.
