Russia, Nov 18 — Addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the world must adopt a strict “zero tolerance” approach toward terrorism and extremism, underscoring India’s commitment to defending its people.
“There can be no justification, no looking away, and no whitewashing,” Jaishankar said, emphasizing that terrorism in all its forms must be confronted decisively.
Highlighting the SCO’s foundational goals, he recalled that the organisation was established in 2001 to tackle terrorism, separatism, and extremism. “These threats have become even more serious in the years that have passed,” he added.
Jaishankar called for reforms in the bloc’s approach, saying, “The SCO must adapt to the changing global landscape, develop an expanded agenda, and reform its working methods. We will contribute positively and fully to these objectives.”
He also addressed the volatile global economic environment, noting that supply-side risks compounded by demand complexities have created urgency for diversification and stronger trade ties. “This is best done by as many of us forging the widest possible economic links,” he said, adding that cooperation must remain “fair, transparent, and equitable.”
India and Pakistan have been permanent SCO members since 2017, and Iran joined the bloc in 2023. Jaishankar stressed the importance of cultural and economic collaboration alongside security priorities to ensure the SCO remains effective in the contemporary geopolitical landscape.
