New Delhi, May 1 — India’s coal production rose to 81.57 million tonnes (MT) in April 2025, reflecting a 3.63% year-on-year growth compared to 78.71 MT in April 2024, according to a release by the Ministry of Coal.

The ministry noted that this growth is part of ongoing efforts to ensure stable supply and operational efficiency across the coal sector. Notably, production from captive and other private mines increased sharply to 14.51 MT in April 2025, up from 11.46 MT in the same period last year.

Coal dispatches also saw a modest rise, reaching 86.64 MT in April 2025 versus 85.11 MT in April 2024. Coal stocks experienced a significant boost, with total reserves held by coal companies at 125.76 MT as of April 30, 2025—up from 102.41 MT the previous year. Coal India Limited (CIL) alone held 105 MT, marking a 22.10% increase from 86.60 MT.

The data reflects a robust annual growth rate of 22.8% in coal stockpiles, highlighting improved supply chain efficiency. The ministry reiterated its commitment to sustainable coal production and reducing dependency on imports.

India had earlier crossed the milestone of one billion tonnes of coal production on March 20, 2025—surpassing the 997.83 MT output in FY 2023–24. With coal accounting for 55% of India’s energy mix and powering over 74% of its electricity, the fuel continues to be central to the country’s energy security.
