Jeweller attacked during delivery, assailants flee with gold in Amritsar

by TheReportingTimes

Amritsar, January 9: During daylight, a group of armed men attacked a jeweller and looted more than 400 grams of gold near New Flower School in Amritsar on Friday, leaving the victim injured.

Police identified the victim as Mukhtiar Singh, a jeweller from the Sultanwind Road area. He was reportedly carrying 425 grams of gold, estimated to be worth around Rs 60 lakh, at the time of the attack.

Officials said Mukhtiar was on his way to deliver the gold to a customer when a black car deliberately hit his motorcycle near the school premises around 10.30 am.

“After knocking him down, the attackers chased and assaulted him with sharp weapons and escaped with the gold,” an officer said, adding that the incident occurred within the limits of the C Division police station.

The injured jeweller was taken to a government hospital after local residents informed his family. Hospital sources said he was out of danger.

Family members claimed the attack may have been premeditated. “We have been receiving extortion calls from people claiming to be gangsters for several days. They were threatening to kill us,” said Saab Singh, a relative of the victim.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishaljit Singh said police teams had been deployed to trace the accused. “We are analysing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and recording the victim’s statement. Further action will be taken based on the findings,” he said.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of traders in the city, particularly those dealing in high-value goods.
