Ranchi, Aug 16: Jharkhand Education Minister Ramdas Soren, a senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), passed away on Friday at the age of 62, JMM national spokesperson Kunal Sarangi confirmed.
“State Education Minister Ramdas Soren, who was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Delhi, is no more,” Sarangi told PTI. He added that Soren’s condition had been critical, and the minister had been on life support.
Soren was admitted to a private hospital in Delhi on August 2 after he suffered a fall in the bathroom of his Jamshedpur residence. Following the accident, he was airlifted to the national capital for specialised care. A multidisciplinary team of senior medical specialists closely monitored his condition and provided intensive treatment, sources said.
Condoling the death of his colleague, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren described the loss as deeply personal. In a post on X, he wrote, “Ramdas Da (brother) should not have left us like this. Last greetings to Dada…”
Born on January 1, 1963, in Ghorabandha village of East Singhbhum district, Ramdas Soren began his political career as the gram pradhan of the Ghorabandha panchayat. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become a key minister in the Hemant Soren-led cabinet.
In the 2024 assembly elections, Soren secured the Ghatshila seat for the third consecutive term, defeating BJP candidate Babulal Soren, the son of former chief minister Champai Soren, reinforcing his political influence in the region.
Soren’s death marks a significant loss for Jharkhand politics and the JMM, with colleagues and constituents mourning the passing of a leader known for his grassroots connection and administrative acumen.
