JALANDHAR, Dec 26— A Shahkot resident has alleged that he was cheated of Rs 12.17 lakh in a cyber investment fraud linked to an online application, prompting police to register a case and launch an investigation.
Police said the complainant, Amritpal Singh of Jain Colony, was persuaded to invest money through an app named Neo Wealth beginning in mid-October.
“In the initial phase, the complainant deposited around Rs 7.5 lakh,” a police officer said. “The app later showed an unusually high profit figure, which raised expectations of returns.”
According to the complaint, the application displayed profits exceeding Rs 82 lakh. However, when Singh tried to withdraw the amount, he was allegedly asked to pay further sums for service tax and processing fees.
Believing the claims, Singh transferred an additional Rs 4.67 lakh before realising that the transactions were part of a scam, police said.
He reported the matter to the police on Nov. 26. After conducting a preliminary inquiry, Shahkot police registered a case against unknown persons.
“The investigation is focused on tracking the online transactions, identifying the accused and recovering the money,” the officer said.
Police have also advised citizens to remain vigilant against cyber frauds, cautioning that promises of unusually high returns are often a red flag, and urged immediate reporting of suspicious online activity.
