CHANDIGARH, July 29 — A special court under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has sentenced a Burail resident to 10 years in prison for drug peddling, nearly seven years after he was caught with a stash of banned injections.
The convict, Mandeep Singh, was arrested by UT police on September 9, 2018, after he was found carrying 13 injections of buprenorphine and 13 of pheniramine maleate—both banned substances—without any medical authorization.
According to the prosecution, Singh was intercepted by a police patrol team near Sector 45-D when he attempted to evade officers while walking towards the Mandi Ground. Suspicious of his behavior, police chased and detained him. A cardboard box in his possession was found to contain the 26 injections.
The health department later confirmed that the substances were classified as banned, and that Singh had no license or permission to possess or transport them. A case was registered at the Sector-34 police station under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.
After a detailed trial, the special NDPS court found Singh guilty of illegal possession and intent to distribute, sentencing him to a decade behind bars. The conviction underscores the strict stance taken by courts in cases involving narcotic and psychotropic substances in the Union Territory.
