PANIPAT, 26 June — Panipat police have arrested a man for allegedly impersonating a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and cheating a local security firm owner out of ₹11.46 lakh by promising a fake security contract at Panjab University.
The accused, Sumit Ahuja, a resident of the 8 Marla area in Panipat, was apprehended following a complaint from Amit Sharma, owner of AV Security Service in Model Town. Sharma alleged he was lured into paying the amount in exchange for help securing a lucrative security services tender.
“Ahuja posed as a DSP posted in the investigation bureau in Panchkula and introduced his wife, Tanveer Sandhu, as an officer in the Punjab and Haryana High Court,” said Superintendent of Police Bhupender Singh on Wednesday.
The elaborate impersonation reportedly helped the couple gain Sharma’s trust. “He [Ahuja] claimed to have influence in Panjab University’s tendering process and assured Sharma of a contract if he paid a commission,” said DSP Satish Vats. A case was registered based on Sharma’s complaint.
The arrest was made by a team led by Inspector Phool Kumar, in-charge of CIA-2, who located and apprehended Ahuja from his residence. During preliminary interrogation, Ahuja admitted to the impersonation and fraud.
Investigators have also uncovered that Ahuja is an accused in another fraud case registered at Ram Nagar police station in Karnal, where he allegedly duped a youth of ₹12 lakh by promising assistance with overseas travel.
“We are verifying all the claims and tracking the flow of money. Further investigation is underway,” SP Singh added.
Police are now working to determine whether others were similarly targeted by Ahuja and whether his wife was actively involved in the scheme.
