Panchkula, March 25 — The Crime Branch arrested a 30-year-old Ramgarh village resident on Sunday for smuggling 840 bottles of illicit liquor in Panchkula.

The accused, identified as Manish, was transporting 70 boxes of liquor in a Mahindra Bolero vehicle when police intercepted him at a checkpoint near the Mansa Devi Complex. The liquor was concealed under a plastic sheet.

SI Mandeep Dhanda, in charge of the Crime Branch, said they acted on specific intelligence about liquor being smuggled from Chandigarh to Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.

“The vehicle was heading towards Panchkula when we stopped it. The driver failed to produce any license or permit,” Dhanda said.

A case under the Excise Act was registered against Manish. He was produced in court and remanded to two-day police custody.
