AMRITSAR, July 29 — The Sultanwind police arrested a property dealer and seized a cache of synthetic kite string and unlicensed liquor from his possession, despite it being off-season for kite flying.
The accused, identified as Gagandeep Singh (46), a resident of Guru Nanak Avenue (formerly New Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar) in the Kot Mit Singh area, was found in possession of 54 rolls of Chinese synthetic kite string, often referred to as manja, which is banned due to its dangerous nature.
“Even though kite-flying festivals like Lohri and Basant are months away, illegal sale and storage of this hazardous string continue secretly,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishaljit Singh. He added that SHO Rajinder Singh led the operation that resulted in the seizure.
The banned synthetic string is notorious for causing serious injuries to people and birds, prompting strict enforcement by authorities. Police said they are investigating both backward and forward linkages to trace the source and distribution network of the seized string.
In a further discovery during the search, police also recovered 78 bottles of liquor from Singh’s premises. “He failed to produce any valid documents for the liquor, which was subsequently seized,” the ADCP added.
An FIR has been registered, and further investigation is underway to determine if the accused was part of a larger supply chain.
