Ludhiana, July 11: A 50-year-old man was fatally stabbed near his home in Meharban late Thursday night by two unidentified men who fled with his mobile phone and ₹1,200 in cash, police said.
The victim, Tilak Raj, had moved from Haryana to Punjab just four months ago with his wife and three sons. “My father had been unwell for two months and stepped out after dinner for a walk,” said his son Danish. “My mother was just about to join him when we heard his cries.”
According to Danish, they rushed outside and saw two men on a scooter fleeing the scene. “They stabbed my father with a sharp-edged weapon. We took him to the hospital, but he didn’t survive,” he said. Doctors declared Tilak Raj dead on arrival.
Police from Meharban station reached the site shortly after receiving the alert and launched an investigation. “We are scanning CCTV footage from the area to trace the suspects,” said the investigating officer. A murder and robbery case has been filed against unknown assailants.
In a separate case that surfaced a day earlier, Ludhiana police arrested three people after the body of a 30-year-old woman was found stuffed in a sack and dumped near Aarti Chowk. The deceased, identified as Reshma, was allegedly strangled by her in-laws before her body was abandoned, police said.
“The accused—Krishan (father-in-law), Dulari (mother-in-law), and a relative named Ajay—have been arrested,” said Joint Commissioner of Police Rupinder Singh. The case came to light after bystanders confronted Krishan and Ajay, who were seen trying to dispose of the sack suspiciously. The duo fled, leaving behind the sack and a motorcycle.
“They tried to mislead people by claiming the sack contained rotten mangoes and later said it was a dead dog,” said an officer familiar with the investigation. “On inspection, we found Reshma’s body with blood coming from her nostrils and visible injuries.”
Police believe Reshma, a native of Lucknow, had been facing domestic violence before the murder. Further investigations are underway to ascertain the motive and whether others were involved.
