Mandatory Health Checks for Grooms: Punjab MP Seeks National Legislation

Malwinder Singh Kang addresses Lok Sabha on drug addiction and health transparency in marriages

New Delhi, March 27: To tackle the surge in marital disputes and substance abuse, AAP MP Malwinder Singh Kang has demanded that the Centre make it legally binding for men to undergo medical and dope tests before marriage. Speaking in Parliament on Friday, the Punjab leader stated that the issuance of marriage certificates should be contingent upon the submission of these health reports. Kang affirmed that this measure would help rule out addiction and undisclosed serious illnesses that often lead to domestic instability.

The MP highlighted a significant gender disparity in how families approach marriage verification. He maintained that while a woman’s profession and personal skills are subjected to high levels of scrutiny, men are rarely held to the same standard of health disclosure. Kang declared that the absence of such checks allows individuals to hide critical health information, which eventually contributes to the rising divorce rates in the country.

“The Centre should make a law in this respect and give a direction to states,” Kang asserted while explaining the rationale behind his proposal. He maintained that the government must intervene to ensure that both parties enter a union with full knowledge of each other’s medical status. The MP affirmed that his suggestion aims to create a level playing field and safeguard women from the consequences of marrying into households where addiction is present but concealed.

According to the MP, the implementation of such a law would serve as a proactive step against domestic violence. Kang stated that by making dope tests mandatory, the state can help ensure that marriages are built on a foundation of honesty and health. He maintained that a uniform national policy is the only way to effectively mandate these checks across all states and territories.
